The thing I absolutely love about this couple is how Ygritte’s beauty is handled. At first, when Jon meets her, she is described as almost mediocre looking. Not strikingly beautiful at all (which is why a few, myself included, are disappointed with her casting). But as their relationship progresses, she is described as increasingly more beautiful. As Jon falls in love with her, he thinks of her as more beautiful almost with every passage.
It is one of the best romantic descriptions I’ve read. The essence of love is captured wonderfully in this. When you love someone, that person is no doubt the most beautiful person in your mind. The physical attraction becomes fuelled by the love you bear each other.
I truly adore how Jon’s love comes across, without it being shoved in our faces. The subtlety is a true case of showing, and not telling. Say what you will about Martin’s writing, but you can’t deny how skilfully their love was portrayed.
