CANVAS GRAPHIC PREPARATION TUTORIAL
People keep asking for graphic tips, textures, advice (even after I posted a resource post along with some advice) and I finally gave in and decided to do a tutorial. This is will probably be my ONLY graphic tutorial because, just like I’ve said to the past 384783 people who’ve asked, my method is TRIAL AND ERROR. No tricks. No short cuts. No fancy tools (unless you count the eye drop tool. Tons of textures. Tons of time. Tons and tons of patience. I’ve done this enough times now that I know how some textures work with others, or what textures give the effect I want, but even then I still struggle and cry and complain and bang my fists. Hours and hours of this. I have enough experience to know that it takes time and many many shitty graphics (or gifs for those magical gif makers) before you finally grasp the concept of textures and coloring and the whole general concept of GRAPHICS. PRACTICE. Some of you might already know this, and that’s fine. Cool. Thumbs up. But this is a tutorial for the basics of my method which i’m 100% sure you’ve seen before.
IF YOU EXPECT ME TO TEACH YOU HOW TO DO THE ENTIRE THEON CAP ABOVE STEP BY STEP THEN LOOK ELSEWHERE. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE.
I’m going to show you what I do for about 80% of the graphics I make before I go nuts with textures. It’s really simple. It’s really easy. It’s really helpful and most important of all, it gives you a lot of freedom.
[[MORE]]1. First off, pick a cap, any cap.
Let’s go with our favorite lovable failure, Theon Greyjoy.

Sup Theon. How you doin’? Just kidding don’t answer that.
[THIS IS IMPORTANT: DO NOT SHARPEN. I REPEAT DO NOT SHARPEN THE IMAGE. Even with it at 1280x720, do not sharpen it. I’ve found that by sharpening it from the start, the image will more likely look distorted with the textures + gradients maps + gradients + sizing. If anything, sharpen it when it’s completely finished. It’s not always the case, but still. It’s better to be safe then “ah fuck why does it look like that? how do i fix it?”]
2. Next take the eye dropper tool (the eye dropper tool gives you the exact color # code for whatever you click on, say like Theon’s blue steely armor, it’s #2d4046. All i did was click the dropper on his armor and BAM. It’s super effective) —

and click on a area near the subject of the cap. I usually pick an area near the head or hair. If it’s a person with flowing hair and I think we all can agree that cropping, painting around individual strands of hair is a pain in the ass.

Now you have a color in your paint/color box.

Also your tool should automatically change to the paint brush tool. (at least PS CS5 does this). If not switch over to that.
3. NOW COMES A TEDIOUS PART AT TIMES AND OTHERS NOT SO BAD. But it requires patience. Now that you’re on your paint tool right click anywhere on the cap and this should pop up.

(This part is essential mainly because it will make things a bit easier for you, or at least it does for me) This box shows the size and hardness of the brush. Size really doesn’t matter since I’m always adjusting it to fit into nooks and crannies. HARDNESS is what is important. I like to have hardness at 96-97%. When you do the lining of the subject, it looks better if the lines are more soft then super hard (plus eventually you’ll be sizing the image down and you won’t be able to even see the “softness”). After adjusting the hardness, start to paint all the areas around the subject. I usually do the easy, bigger areas before actually working on the more difficult bits.

NOw change the size of your brush (whatever works for you) and do the finer details (also you might want to zoom in for this. Nice and close up). Don’t be afraid to paint over the lines. As long as it looks smooth and natural, then who cares. No one is going to tell (right?right?).
COLORING AROUND HAIR TIPS: When it comes to hair, this Theon graphic isn’t so bad, but with this jaime/brienne graphic, I had to color over some stray flowing strands that looked too awkward when I tried to paint around. Sometimes I don’t bother trying to fill every space around the hair and just cross my fingers that with all the textures and coloring that you won’t notice. Point is, hair is a bitch. Do your best. Rule of thumb, make it look natural as possible.

BAM THERE YOU GO.
4. Now it’s time to adjust the canvas. Take your curser and go up to Image and find Canvas size on your drop menu, click and this should pop up.

IMPORTANT: CHANGE INCHES TO PIXELS. CLICK BOTTOM ARROW FOR ANCHOR. CHANGE EXTENSION COLOR TO MATCH THE EXACT COLOR YOU JUST USED TO FILL IN YOU CAP. The anchor part anchors your image to the bottom, so when you extend your canvas, it only expands upward instead of both up and down. The extension color is the color of the canvas. Pixels is easier to register size. I adjusted my canvas hight to 1200 and didn’t even touch the width since Theon is already pretty much center.
SO it should look like this now

Now this is more is more a personal preference but for a tutorials sake, I’m going to crop the image a bit. Sort of like the Jaime cap.

This is where I usually change things up. Sometimes I color it really crazy. Sometimes I just add curves (adjusts the lighting) and a gradient map.

Then I go with textures. I kid you not. I just throw things on there. I adjust the settings. Play with the arrangement.

SOMETHINGS DON’T WORK AT ALL. SOMETHING ARE INSTANT. SOMETIMES I RECOLOR THE BACKGROUND AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT COLOR TO A COLOR I LIKE MORE WITH ALL THE TEXTURES ON TOP. SOMETIMES I LIKE NOTHING AND IT JUST SUCKS SO I START ALL OVER AGAIN. SOMETIMES I KEEP GOING AND I’LL HAVE LIKE 20 DIFFERENT TEXTURES ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER (the jaime cap is like that) SOMETIMES IT’S REALLY SIMPLE LIKE THIS THEON ONE.
TRIAL
AND
ERROR.

What I do no for sure is how I prep the cap before I do all the textures. This painting out the background helps create a canvas to use all 119 texture packs I have to their fullest potential.
ONCE YOU’RE DONE, SHARPEN IT ONCE, SEE IF IT STLL LOOKS GOOD (if not undo sharpen) THEN RESIZE TO 500 UNDER IMAGE SIZE AND YOU’RE GOOD TO GO.
Anyway, I hope that was helpful. ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE NICE.
